While Francis Scott Key's reputation for courtroom eloquence and patriotism preceded him, he was also an outspoken opponent of a war threatening the young United States. A man of faith and strong, shared beliefs with the founding fathers, the idea of a war with Britain weighed heavy on him. As the War of 1812 loomed, Col. George Armistead faced his own emotional battles as he equipped Fort McHenry and prepared the mixed army of veterans and townsmen. His pride for the nation motivated his order for a major symbol to represent their resolve. Mary Pickersgill with her mother, daughter, and apprentice Grace Wisher, successfully carried out the sewing of that epic garrison flag known today as the Star-Spangled Banner. Now with Britain at Baltimore's door and after a chain of grief-stricken decisions leading to further dread, Francis Scott Key with heart in hand, answered the call he was looking for. Walking into the enemies hands to negotiate an esteemed friend's release on the eve of Britain's great attack, he would find himself a witness to the nation's darkest night. As the armies battled, the nation's freedom was uncertain. Key could only wait until the cannons silenced and morning fog lifted, to witness the great moment when his nation's flag was still there.
Why Now?
Now, more than ever, America is need of its history and its restoration. After years of attacks on the facts that made us the great nation we are, it is time to tell the story of the moment that created the poem that we hold dear as our national anthem. Key Moment, the script, was heavily researched and stays true to the stories that put our flag in place. Key Moment the film, while adding characters to help augment the story, will not treat Francis Scott Key or the events in his life unfairly.

DEFENCE OF FORT McHENRY
Tune—ANACREON IN HEAVEN.
O! say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there— O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected now shines on the stream— ’Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havock of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash’d out their foul foot-steps’ pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave, From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave; And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
O! thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov’d home, and the war’s desolation, Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto—“In God is our trust!” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
